Did You Know
The Booth study found that accident-related fatalities increased by 3% annually since the rideshare services were introduced. This number includes pedestrians and totals an average of 987 people per year.
Insurance Policy Information
As an injury lawyer, it’s absolutely crucial that Uber and Lyft riders and drivers understand the insurance policies in place. Uber provides coverage for third-party liability, including other drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians on the roadway, as well as passengers in the vehicle. They offer at least $50,000 in injury liability per person, $100,000 per accident, and $25,000 in property damage per accident.
This coverage doesn’t apply, however, when another driver is at fault. In the event that an Uber driver is involved in an accident on the way to pick up a passenger, they’ll have coverage for third-party liability, injuries from uninsured or underinsured motorists, and comprehensive coverage.
While a rider is in the vehicle, Uber’s insurance covers at least $1 million in liability if the driver is at fault. If another driver is to blame, but doesn’t have insurance, Uber will still provide bodily injury coverage.
It’s important to keep in mind that if a driver uses their car for personal use, there won’t be any insurance coverage from Uber. Drivers might only be able to file claims with their own insurance companies.
Lyft’s insurance policy is very similar, offering liability coverage from the time a driver accepts a ride request to the time the ride has been completed in the Lyft app.
