GALVESTON, TX – Two people were hospitalized yesterday when an oil storage tank they were working near exploded. Galveston spokesperson Marissa Barnett reports that both individuals are expected to survive.
The explosion occurred at the Pelican Island Storage Terminal, a storage facility for crude oil located in the 3800 block of GTI Boulevard, at approximately 3:20 p.m. Authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for the nearby Texas A&M University Galveston campus while freighters successfully combated the blaze with chemical foam.
The case is currently being investigated, according to Barnett.
Explosions and the oil industry
The oil industry is one of the biggest sectors in Texas, employing hundreds of thousands of people in the Houston area alone. The ports of Houston and Galveston handle roughly 2.5 million barrels of crude per day, and the volume of products handled, combined with the pressures of bringing them to market, can put these workers at risk.
Companies have a responsibility to provide their employees and contractors with a safe work environment. And a safe environment is especially important when that work involves highly flammable—and therefore highly dangerous—oil products. If safety precautions are not taken, explosions can happen, and when they do, workers can be seriously injured — even killed.
If you or someone you love has been injured or tragically lost their life in an oil explosion, you may be entitled to financial compensation for your medical bills, lost wages, future expenses, and more. Family members of individuals killed in oil explosions may be entitled to workers compensation and death benefits.
