HOUSTON, TX – A large manufacturer of baby products recalled over 3 million lounger pads after they were associated with eight infant deaths in under five years.

According to a report by the Houston Chronicle, the cushion, which the Boppy Company manufactured, was recalled, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), after a year-long investigation.

Dangers if Infant Loungers

Children’s products are subject to recalls for various reasons, but most often they are due to safety. Some of the most common reasons for recalls include:

  • Safety Concerns: If a product poses a risk to consumer health or safety, the manufacturer or CPSC may recall it. This includes products that are defective, contaminated, or have labeling that is incorrect or misleading.
  • Quality Issues: Products may be subject to recall if they do not meet the quality standards set by regulatory agencies or industry standards. This includes products that have defects, such as missing parts, or products that do not perform as they should.
  • Regulatory Noncompliance: Products may be subject to recall if they do not meet regulatory requirements, such as failing to comply with labeling requirements or other safety standards set by government agencies.
  • Customer Complaints: If a product receives a large number of customer complaints, it may be recalled. This could include issues such as defective products, poor quality, or misleading labeling.
  • Manufacturing Errors: Products may be recalled if there are errors or defects in the manufacturing process that result in a product that is unsafe or does not meet quality standards.

The commission determined that the pillow was linked to the suffocation and eight infants deaths between December 2015 and June 2020.

In a statement released on Thursday, Robert Adler, acting chair of the safety commission, said, “Since we know that infants sleep so much of the time — even in products not intended for sleep — and since suffocation can happen so quickly, these Boppy lounger products are simply too risky to remain on the market.”

The loungers were sold between January 2004 and September 2021 at major retailers such as Target, Walmart, and Amazon.

Boppy is advising those who purchased the lounger pads to stop using them and contact the company for a refund as soon as possible.
