According to WTOC, it’s been 14 years since 14 workers lost their lives during the Imperial Sugar Refinery explosion in Port Wentworth, Georgia.

The explosion took place in a refinery packaging building and was caused by large piles of combustible sugar dust.  38 refinery workers were injured during the blast. Their injuries included serious and life-threatening burns.

The blast is known as one of the worst industrial accidents in American history. Large portions of the refinery were completely blown apart. The skeleton and foundation of the plant including steel girders and cement slabs could be seen after the explosion.

Dust explosions are all too common in the United States. The Chemical Safety Hazard and Investigation Board’s report showed that 281 explosions that took place between 1980 and 2005 resulted in 119 deaths and 718 injuries.
