One Fatality and One Injury in Helicopter Crash near Idaho Falls

A helicopter crash at Ririe Reservoir, about 25 miles east of Idaho Falls, resulted in one fatality and one injury on the afternoon of February 20. The Bonneville County Coroner identified the deceased as 59-year-old Bradford Brown from Alpine, Utah. Brown was the CEO and Founder of ATL Technology and a board member of BioUtah.

BioUtah released a statement mourning Brown’s passing, highlighting his contributions to the medical device industry and his passion for flying. Kelvyn Cullimore, president & CEO of BioUtah, described Brown as a dedicated entrepreneur, a family man, and a skilled pilot.

The crash occurred around 4:40 p.m. between Ririe Dam and the Blacktail Access area. First responders used snowmobiles to reach the wreckage, located more than a mile east of Ririe Dam. Bonneville County Sheriff’s deputies found downed power lines near the crash site, prompting officials to close the reservoir and surrounding areas due to safety concerns.

Multiple agencies, including the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, Search and Rescue, Idaho Fish and Game, Jefferson Central Fire, and Idaho Falls Fire, responded to the scene. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were notified, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Helicopter Crashes

Helicopter accidents can result from various factors, ranging from mechanical failures to human errors and environmental conditions. Some of the most common causes include:

Pilot Error

Human error is one of the leading causes of helicopter crashes. Pilots may make mistakes due to inexperience, fatigue, poor judgment, or inadequate training. Errors in navigation, failure to assess weather conditions, or miscalculations during takeoff and landing can all lead to accidents.

Mechanical Failures

Defective or poorly maintained components can cause critical system failures in helicopters. Mechanical issues may stem from manufacturing defects, design flaws, or improper maintenance. Problems with the rotor system, engine failure, hydraulic system malfunctions, or electrical issues can all contribute to crashes.

Adverse Weather Conditions

Helicopters operate in various environments, sometimes encountering severe weather conditions. High winds, fog, thunderstorms, and ice accumulation can make flying dangerous, leading to loss of control, low visibility, or mechanical strain on the aircraft.

Air Traffic Control Errors

Helicopters share airspace with other aircraft, making proper communication with air traffic control crucial. Miscommunication, errors in directing flights, or failure to warn pilots about potential hazards can lead to mid-air collisions or crashes.

Bird Strikes and External Factors

Collisions with birds or other external objects, such as power lines or tall structures, can cause significant damage to helicopters. Bird strikes are particularly hazardous at low altitudes, where helicopters frequently operate.

Fuel System Issues

Fuel contamination, leaks, or improper fueling can lead to engine failure, increasing the risk of a crash. A lack of fuel due to miscalculations can also result in emergency landings or accidents.

Overloading and Improper Weight Distribution

Every helicopter has a specific weight limit. Overloading or improper distribution of weight can affect stability and maneuverability, leading to control loss and accidents.

Defective Design and Manufacturing Issues

Some helicopter crashes result from inherent flaws in the aircraft’s design or defects in manufacturing. If a component fails due to poor engineering or defective parts, it may cause a catastrophic failure.

Potential Injuries in Helicopter Crashes

Helicopter crashes often result in severe injuries due to high-impact collisions, fire, or ejection from the aircraft. Some of the most common injuries include:

  • Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI): Head trauma can occur due to sudden impact or debris. TBIs range from concussions to severe brain damage, leading to long-term cognitive impairment, memory loss, or paralysis.
  • Spinal Cord Injuries: Severe crashes can result in spinal fractures or nerve damage, leading to partial or complete paralysis.
  • Burn Injuries: Helicopter crashes often lead to fires due to fuel ignition. Victims may suffer severe burns, requiring extensive medical treatment, surgeries, and rehabilitation.
  • Broken Bones and Fractures: The force of impact can cause multiple fractures, including broken ribs, legs, arms, and pelvis.
  • Internal Organ Damage: Blunt force trauma can lead to internal bleeding and damage to organs such as the lungs, liver, or kidneys, requiring emergency surgery.
  • Amputations: Crashes involving high-impact forces or fires can lead to limb loss or the need for surgical amputation.
  • Psychological Trauma: Survivors of helicopter crashes often experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression, requiring long-term mental health treatment.

Sadly, many helicopter crashes result in death. In such cases, survivors and family members may also be able to pursue legal action, such as a wrongful death claim.

Legal Implications of Helicopter Crashes

When a helicopter crash occurs, determining liability is crucial in seeking compensation. Several parties may be held responsible, depending on the cause of the crash.

  • Pilot Liability: If a crash results from pilot error, the pilot or their employer may be held liable for negligence. This includes improper flight decisions, failure to follow safety protocols, or inadequate training.
  • Helicopter Manufacturer Liability: If a design defect or faulty component caused the crash, the manufacturer may be held responsible under product liability laws. Victims can file claims for defective design, manufacturing defects, or failure to warn of known risks.
  • Maintenance Company Liability: If a crash resulted from poor maintenance, the company responsible for servicing the helicopter could be held accountable for negligence in repairs, inspections, or failure to replace defective parts.
  • Air Traffic Control Liability: Errors in air traffic control, such as miscommunication or failure to provide critical flight information, may result in legal action against aviation authorities.
  • Government Liability: If a crash involves a military or government-operated helicopter, special legal considerations, including sovereign immunity, may apply.

Victims and their families can file negligence claims against responsible parties to recover damages for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and wrongful death.

How Helicopter Crash Victims Can Protect Their Rights

If you or a loved one has been involved in a helicopter crash, taking the following steps can help protect your legal rights and improve your chances of obtaining compensation:

Seek Medical Attention Immediately

Even if injuries do not seem severe, immediate medical evaluation is crucial. Some injuries, such as internal bleeding or brain trauma, may not be immediately apparent.

Document Everything

Collect evidence from the scene, including photographs, witness statements, and official reports. Keep all medical records, bills, and documentation related to the crash.

Consult an Experienced Aviation Attorney

Helicopter crash claims involve complex aviation laws. Hiring a lawyer with experience in aviation litigation can help you navigate legal challenges and ensure the responsible parties are held accountable.

Preserve the Wreckage and Evidence

If possible, ensure that the wreckage is not tampered with. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will conduct investigations, and preserving evidence can help support legal claims.

File a Lawsuit Within the Statute of Limitations

Each state has specific time limits for filing aviation-related claims. Consulting with an attorney promptly ensures you do not miss critical deadlines.

Understand Your Compensation Options

Victims may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, future rehabilitation costs, pain and suffering, and wrongful death claims for deceased victims.
