HAMPSHIRE, IL – An explosion at a chemical plant killed one person and critically injured another, according to NBC 5 Chicago. According to witnesses and those living close by, the explosion occurred at the W. R. Meadows building materials plant in Hampshire at around 10:45 a.m. on Friday. Initial reports say that the employees were cleaning a tank inside one of the buildings when the explosion occurred. It is not yet known what type of chemicals were involved or what caused the incident.

The injured employee was transported to a hospital in Elgin for treatment. The name of the deceased individual has not yet been released, according to the Kane County Coroner’s Office, which is waiting until the victim’s next-of-kin has been notified.
